Charente today


Today, the Charente department is a wonderful holiday destination. The combination of beautiful cities such as Angoulême and Cognac and the many villages in the beautiful nature makes this area an excellent holiday destination. Thanks to the favorable location of this department, trips to cities such as Bordeaux, Périgueux and Limoges are possible. The Atlantic coastline is also easily accessible, which makes this department an attractive holiday destination.
Charente region New Aquitaine
The Charente region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine on the west coast of France is blessed with innumerable riches, including the weather. The four departments (Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne) make up the sunniest region of the Atlantic coast. The exceptional number of hours of sunshine is among the highest in France and corresponds to that of the hinterland of the Mediterranean. The Charente department is named after the river of the same name, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Rochefort (Charente-Maritime). It is an area with meandering rivers and vast lakes with sandy beaches. Walks and bike rides lead you through a varied landscape of forests, fields and vineyards. The picturesque villages in this department mostly date from the Romanesque period. Cycling enthusiasts can indulge themselves there are special cycling routes in a very varied nature. Walks and routes are available from our Chambre d'hôte, from short to long. Recreation on the beach or lake, swimming in the river, fishing, picnicking, canoeing and also golf in the very close vicinity. Day trip to a village, city, chateau, museums and many other possibilities.

Chateau de Lerse
Chateau de Lerse is less than 10 minutes away from our B&B. A beautiful location that is often used for weddings. Have you been invited to a party at the Chateau? Then our B&B is the perfect location to relax after the party.

Montmoreau-Saint-Cybard
Montmoreau, 4 km away, is a nice French village, with all necessary amenities such as; a supermarket, garage, doctor, pharmacy, bank, boulanger and some nice restaurants. The SANEF . train also stops here

Chalais
Chalais, 15 km away, has a nice, small, but busy weekly market on Monday mornings and has a beautiful Chateau, with a "star restaurant", which rises above the village.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
Aubeterre-sur-Dronne at 19 km belongs to 'les plus beaux Villages de France'. A historic and artistic village, of which the monolithic church carved into the mountain from the sixth century is world famous. www.aubeterresurdronne.com Beautiful location, plenty of nice restaurants, terraces, shops and a beautiful village square with lime trees. In the summer months touristy but never overcrowded, Sunday morning market from May to September.

Angouleme
Angoulême, 33 km away, is the city of comic book heroes, where the international comics festival is held every year, and the famous Circuit des Remparts, a historic racing circuit in Angoulême, www.angouleme-tourisme.com The city offers a nice variety of historic buildings, cozy shopping streets and picturesque restaurants. The TGV from Paris and Brussels also stops here.

Ribérac
Ribérac (Dordogne) at 35 km is on Friday morning, one of the largest and nicest markets in the area, with an authentic French atmosphere.

Brantome
Brantôme (Dordogne) at 57 km is the Venice of France, well worth a visit. When you visit the town you will soon understand why Brantôme is also known as the Venice of the Perigord. Its location on the river Dronne is truly beautiful. In the town you can stroll through the beautiful streets, or relax on one of the terraces. A visit to the abbey of Saint-Pierre de Brantôme is also highly recommended.

Cognac
Cognac at 59 km is a place in the Charente department. The town owes its name to the world famous drink Cognac, originally from this region. In particular, the old town of this town, with its beautiful medieval streets and buildings, is more than worth a visit. The combination of the many nice shops and terraces ensures that you can easily spend an afternoon in this beautiful place. A visit/tour in one of the renowned "Cognac Houses" is also possible.

La Rochefoucauld
La Rochefoucauld at 62 km, a visit to the imposing Château de La Rochefoucauld, still inhabited by the Countess. When you see the Château for the first time, you think you have arrived near the famous Loire Valley with its countless beautiful castles. But nothing could be further from the truth, you are just here in the south-east of the Charente, in the border area with the Haute-Vienne and the Dordogne. The castle of La Rochefoucauld towers over the town of the same name. The chateau and the nearby monastery are well worth a visit.

Perigueux
Périgueux (Dordogne) at 71 km, in the heart of the Perigord, www.dordogne-vakantie.nl a beautiful old town dating back to 1240 with medieval streets, plenty of shops, a rich nightlife, restaurants and a beautiful cathedral. Well worth a visit. The pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela also runs through this city.

St.Emilion
St.Emilion 72 km, the famous village, and many others, perched in the heart of one of the most prestigious vineyards of Bordeaux, and is of course known for its excellent wines, but the remarkable real estate heritage is also more than worth a visit worth! As for the sweet-tempered and gourmet, they can also indulge themselves here with a Grand Cru wine or a delicious macaroon, which has been made according to traditional methods since 1620!

Bergerac
Bergerac (Dordogne) at 86 km, the town is located on the banks of the Dordogne river. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Bergerac was an important French inland port. It is a nice outing to view the city from a flat-bottomed boat on the Dordogne river. But it is also a wonderful city to stroll through. Walk through the pedestrianized medieval streets and enjoy the pretty half-timbered houses, past the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac. Also nearest airport, from Rotterdam with Transavia.

Talmont sur Gironde in Saint Palais sur Mer
Talmont sur Gironde at 93 km and Saint Palais sur Mer at 108 km seaside resorts with many facilities, where you are welcome for a stay with the whole family for a wonderful day at the beach and cozy terraces, where you can eat delicious mussels and oysters, on the boardwalk.

Bordeaux
Bordeaux at 103 km, a beautiful city in France, where there is plenty to see and experience. It is the capital of the Gironde department. You have many beautiful squares such as the Place de la Bourse and the Place Pey Berland. These squares are surrounded by impressive buildings and beautiful statues. You also have nice museums, such as the Musée des Vins, where you can learn everything about Bordeaux wines. The CAPC museum is also very worthwhile. Here you will find modern works of art by world famous painters. In short, you will have a great time during a city trip in Bordeaux. The BOD airport is also located here, which can be reached from Schiphol with eg Easyjet and KLM.

Golf courses in the area
In Aubeterre, nestled in a beautiful valley on the border of the Charente and Dordogne and located on the estate of Longeveau, the 9-hole golf course, par 64 (2x32) offers a challenge to golfers of different levels. On the outskirts of Angoulême, in the middle of the hilly landscape, there is an 18-hole, par 70 course. From the 35-hectare course you can enjoy breathtaking views between the strokes.
